If you have been keeping up with social media, in general, you are probably aware of “lash lifting,” this procedure unlike lash extensions, does not add any extra hair to lash line, rather it simply curls and lifts your lashes upward, making them appear bigger and fuller. Since the procedure has just been recently introduced, it is recommended to wait a while before booking your appointment. In the meantime, you can opt for a cheaper alternative, a good mascara. So, I will be listing, what I believe is the best mascara 2017-2018. So, out of the many mascaras, I have reviewed, the one that stood out most for me and delivered was the Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Mascara (Blackest Black) for $6.25. You can continue reading below for a more detailed review and which mascaras I compared it with.
As someone with barely any lashes, I am always on the lookout for the best mascara on the market. For me, a good mascara is one that does not clump, crumble or make my lashes stick together because nobody likes spider legs for eyelashes. Volume and length are also a key factor taken into consideration because I have thin, straight, Asian lashes. I also give preference to the weight of the formula and lastly, I match it to the price point to see if the product is delivering its money’s worth.
The first mascara I will be reviewing is the L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara. This mascara costs around $5.29 and claims to thicken up to 5x your original thickness. The formula itself is very creamy which I appreciate, it holds true on its vow to be a non-clumping mascara and, it does add volume to the lashes. However, it is sadly not a smudge-proof mascara, and as someone who tends to rub their eyes a lot carelessly, it isn’t something I can see myself wearing in the future.
Next, we have the 3D Fiber Lash Mascara by Mia Adora costing around $19.99. It gives your eyelashes the length and volume of falsies without going through the trouble of buying or applying them. It’s a two-step application procedure. You first have to apply the magnifying gel to your lashes and then apply the 3D fiber lash mascara. This is a little tricky to use, and if you’re new to 3D mascara like myself, you might also struggle the first few times because my eyelashes kept clumping together the first few times. However, once you get the hang of it, it can be amongst the best mascara for short lashes. It is crazy lengthening which I appreciate but I personally, would not be as dedicated to the extensive effort that goes into applying this one.
Then we have the second cheapest mascara out of my entire list, the e.l.f. Volumizing and Defining Mascara for just $1.99. This mascara comes with a silicone flexible wand which is quite an interesting feature. It makes maneuvering the wand a lot easier especially around tricky areas, but it does not allow you to really ‘get in there’ in terms of volume. While it did help with lengthening the lashes, it did not hold up to its promise to make the lashes appear thicker. However, for $2 it is a real bargain.
Moving on to the next option we have the COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara retailing at $6.25. Now COVERGIRL is a cult favorite when it comes to their mascaras, and this one keeps its promise. It’s very thickening, and it really gives my lashes a lot of volume. However, my straight Asian lashes had issues coping with the formula. While it did give my lashes a lot of volume, it weighed them down for me, and it just felt heavy on my lashes. Other than that, this is still amongst my top favorite mascaras. I also dub this the best mascara for sensitive eyes and I have not faced any problems applying it even with contacts on which is quite a feat if you ask me.
I will also be talking about the $5.69 COVERGIRL Clump Crusher Extensions. After the orange LashBlast mascara, I had high expectations for this one as well. While the formula is amazing and it lengthens the eyelashes, it does not add as much volume as its predecessor and while is does not clump at first, however, it does begin to clump after applying multiple coats, which is necessary if you really want the same results as the orange LashBlast.
Next, we have the New Long Curling Makeup Eyelash Black Waterproof Fiber Mascara Eye Lashes which retails for only $1.69. It consists of 2 steps. The first mascara wand is supposed to lengthen and the second mascara wand is meant to add volume to the lashes. A good wand goes a long way when it comes to mascara, and they did pay attention to their wands. However, their formula was not up to the mark. First of all, the smell threw me off. It wasn’t entirely unpleasant since it wore off after a while but it wasn’t welcoming either. While it did curl and lengthen my lashes, it was not giving me a lot of volume, and multiple coats led to heaviness and clumping.
I will next be talking about one of my favorite go-to drugstore brands, and that is Physician’s Formula. It’s just an all-rounder for me in general. Regardless, because I could not help myself, I bought the Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Kit in Nude retailing at $14.49 which is pretty reasonable given the number of products you are getting out of it. I will be discussing the mascara only here. You are provided a single mascara with two color options at opposite ends, mainly a black and a brown mascara. They are great mascaras but they aren’t the best in terms of giving extra volume, and they are not smudge proof either.
I will now move onto the N.Y.C. New York Color Big Bold Curl Mascara, retailing at $4.45. I am going to have to admit that this mascara’s wand is amazing for curling eyelashes and I have very stubborn, straight eyelashes and the wand makes application a lot easier, however, the only fault I found with this is that it is not very buildable. It starts clumping once you add more than two layers. However, it compliments other mascaras really well.
The Best Mascara of 2017-2018
I saved the best for last, naturally. Initiate drumroll! In my opinion, the best mascara for 2017-2018 is the Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Mascara! Retailing at $5.94 this mascara delivers in every aspect and is also, in my opinion, the best Maybelline mascara yet.
Its bristled wand really delivers and makes it possible for you to get at each individual lash, leaving nothing uncovered. By turning the wand upward on your lashes, you can curl your lashes effortlessly without having to use a lash curler which is a win for me. The formula is fantastic; it does not clump at all, and it really helps thicken the eyelashes without clumping them together. 2 strokes are more than enough to get decent results. So, if you love the illusion of thick lashes, you know what to buy.
If anything, this entire adventure taught me that a higher price does not necessarily mean better results. All of these mascaras were drugstore brands, and some of them can compete with higher end mascaras as well. Ultimately, the purpose of makeup is to make you feel good about yourself, and the price of your makeup should not be what matters, it’s the results that matter.
